Alprazolam is the oral tablet that is a generic medicine, which is a short-acting benzodiazepine that treats anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Its brand name is Xanax.

The other uses include chemotherapy-induced nausea, together with the other medications. It is not to use in children under 16 years of age, and elderly patients above 65 should more cautious in the use of it due to the risk of side effects is more in them.

Alprazolam comes in different forms and strengths, such as:

Forms of Alprazolam: Alprazolam (Xanax) XR (extended-release), Alprazolam (Xanax) IR (immediate-release).

Strengths of Alprazolam: Its disintegrating tablets comes in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg tablets.

Also, the extended-release tablets comes in 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, and 3 mg.

However, it is an oral medication that reaches its peak after one or two hours.

How does it work?

Alprazolam belongs to the group of medicines called benzodiazepines or “benzos”; it directly works on the brain or nervous system (CNS) to produce calming effects. It effects by binding with GABA, GABA receptors present in the brain are the most prolific inhibitory receptor. 

These chemical receptors mediate inhibitory or give calming effects.

However, binding of Alprazolam with GABA receptors opens the channels, and chloride enters the cells, which makes resistance to depolarisation, Afterall it has a depressant attitude that affects synaptic transmission and reduces anxiety.

Xanax effects the Central NS and brain to give the calming effects or euphoric feeling. It is an addictive medication, so caution Iis required during treatment.

However, it is an effective drug for people with alcohol dependence to avoid alcohol dependence. It is a safe and effective medication if used as prescribed.

How quickly will Alprazolam work?

A regular benzodiazepine can work for about 5 hours or more. An extended-release (XR) benzodiazepine can work for about eleven hours.

Benzodiazepine incorporates a lot of fast onset of action—30 to 60 minutes—and might last up to eight hours.

How long does Alprazolam last?

The clearance of the medicine entirely depends upon its dosage, strength. In contrast, in general, it intakes four days to get wash-off entirely from the body. The effect of Alprazolam stays in your system for about 2 to 3 days after the last dose.

But in some patients, it lasts for a week in their system.

 

Side effects

Along with the needed effects, stimulants may give its adverse effects when misused or overdose. However, it is a short-term prescription medication for anxiety or panic disorders. The possible side effects of Alprazolam include:

  • Anterograde amnesia
  • Concentration problems
  • Ataxia
  • Slurred speech
  • Headache
  •  Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  •  Unsteadiness
  • Impaired coordination
  • Vertigo

 

Although, overdose can be moderate to severe that depend upon the quantity indigested by the patient or the other drugs that are using together. Also, overdose can cause CNS depression or fatal withdrawals.
